The oilseed sector (oils), like other sectors of the agri-food industry, has undergone several restructurings since our country's independence.
The purpose of this paper is to explain the various transformations undergone by the oilseed sector in Algeria since independence to the present day, using a qualitative longitudinal analysis based on a chronological matrix (Miles and Huberman 2003), which has enabled us to identify seven (06) sequential periods and analyze the structure of the sector in question through a temporal breakdown of the phenomenon studied.
The main results highlight the costs generated by table oil subsidies in Algeria, which continue to weigh heavily on public finances (108 billion dinars in subsidies in 2003) and on the country's food trade balance (third largest importer of soybeans in the world in 2023).
