Abstract

Bamboo value chain has a great potential in the economy and it offers sustainable livelihood in the farming, processing and manufacturing industries. Limitation
of the sector is however underdeveloped value chains, non-use of modern technology and ignorance of commercial viability of bamboo despite it potential to
sustain rural and sustainable development.Northern India and especially has immense untapped potential, in the way of economic growth of bamboo. To realize
this potential, it will be necessary to make specific investments and systematically strengthen the bamboo value chain. The current paper investigates the current
value chain dynamics in 33 markets in the northern states, i.e. Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the National Capital Territory of Delhi. In order to determine
the degree of value addition at different levels, a total of 905 stake holders were interviewed in this case comprising of farmers, contractors, retailers, as well as
industries dealing with raw and processed bamboo. The results have shown that value addition at farmer or producer level is virtually negligible. Contractors,
middle men and retailers add an estimated 10-30% value addition to raw bamboo whereas manufacturers and industries add maximum value addition of 20 to 200
percent. In this paper, the value addition level among different stakeholders of the bamboo supply chain is elaborated by providing a study.
