Effect of multivitamin syrup and ascorbic acid acid tablet on the colour stability of zirconomer restorative material - An in vitro study

Abstract

Background: Multivitamin syrups and Ascorbic acid tablets are used on a regular basis by humans as an alternative of dietary supplements. The sugar content in these preparations which are added to nullify the bitter taste have been known to cause various oral health problems such as dental caries. They may have a significant effect on the restorative materials too. The aim of the study is to assess the Colour stability of Zirconomer after exposure to multivitamin syrups and Ascorbic acid tablets.  Materials and methods: 14 disc shaped specimens of Zirconomer were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 contains ascorbic acid tablets and group 2 contains multivitamin syrup. The specimens were immersed for 2 minutes everyday for 28 days.The colour stability was evaluated using Konica Minolta CM-5 spectrophotometer, and the ∆E value was tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis. The mean and standard deviation values were calculated with the help of SPSS v2.0 software with the p value and paired T-test was done to determine significance. Results: In our study, the Multivitamin syrup mean value was 8.0643 and the Ascorbic acid tablet is 5.3614. The Multivitamin syrup  Std. deviation was 0.95899 and the Ascorbic acid tablet Std. deviation was 0.38492. A p-value of 0.016 (p < 0.05) was statistically significant. According to the SPSS results, the Multivitamin syrup group was more prone to losing colour as compared to the Ascorbic acid tablet group. Conclusion: There was a significant difference between the Multivitamin syrup and Ascorbic acid tablet delta E values, thus showing the poor colour stability of Zirconia infused glass ionomer cements.  The Multivitamin syrup group was less colour stable than the Ascorbic acid tablet group.
